Digital Banking Report Wave 2 in Australia

Following our Wave 1 Report published in 2019, YouGov continues to investigate Australian consumers’ perception on the evolution of digital payment methods pre-pandemic and during. While 1 in 4 Aussies regularly uses mobile payment apps for everyday transactions, some are concerned about its security. Does the ongoing pandemic accelerate the growth of mobile apps payment usage?

In this report, YouGov re-investigated the attitudinal and behavioural changes of digital payment methods in Australia. The Wave 2 report includes the findings of:

  • The shift of payment methods used in Australia and the difference amongst generations
  • Australians’ preference on payment method – cash or digital payment app
  • Justifications of using cash or digital payment methods
  • Developments/ innovations that facilitate digital payment app update
  • Australians‘ attitudes towards moving to a cashless society

Methodology

This study was conducted online between the 8th and 13th of December 2021 (wave 2). This will be compared to wave 1 which was run between 12th – 15th December 2019 (pre-COVID-19 pandemic).

The sample comprised of a nationally representative sample of 1,074 Australian adults aged 18 years or older (wave 2). The sample from wave 1 comprise of a nationally representative sample of 1,079 Australian adults aged 18 years and older.

YouGov designed the questionnaire, a copy of which has been included in the report.

Following the completion of interviewing, the total sample universe was weighted by age, gender and region to reflect the latest ABS population estimates.
