A new Netflix show has taken the world by storm. “Baby Reindeer”, created and starred in by Richard Gadd, claims to tell the true story of Gadd’s (who plays the role of Donny Dunn) experience with a stalker, Martha Scott.
Recent YouGov Surveys insight has found that over a quarter (26%) of Australians have watched part, or all, of this new series.
Gen Z were the most avid watchers, with 39% of the generation having tuned in. This was followed by 36% of Millennials and 24% of Gen X, with only 12% of Baby Boomers having seen the show.
Of those who’d seen Baby Reindeer, 40% thought the show was good, with another 45% describing it as “very good”.
Only 10% found their viewing experience “bad” or “somewhat bad”. 5% were unsure.
The poignant storyline hit a chord with many, and two thirds (66%) of viewers went on to look further into the story and its characters after viewing.
38% googled Richard Gadd and read more about his life, with the same amount (38%) also googling Gadd’s real-life stalker.
40% consumed more content around the show, such as interviews and debates, and 13% participated in online discussions around the show.
34% of viewers said they didn’t do any of these actions after watching the show.
After the release of Baby Reindeer, some viewers took their investigation to the next level, and identified Gadd’s alleged real-life stalker as Fiona Harvey. Fiona has since come out with her own version of events, denying Gadd’s recount.
Of those who watched Baby Reindeer, and subsequently looked more into the story, 71% said they believe Richard Gadd’s side. However, almost one in five (16%) have expressed belief in Fiona’s version of the story.
13% said they are unsure.
Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provides quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. This study was conducted online between 23 May and 28 May 2024, with a national sample of 1,034 Australians, using a questionnaire designed by YouGov. Data figures have been weighted by age, gender, and location to be representative of all adults in Australia (18 years or older) as per the latest population estimates provided by the ABS.
