Australia’s RSPCA has topped YouGov’s Charity Rankings 2023 for the nation for the second year running, with a Consideration score of 31.1 points. Next was Cancer Council Australia (30.2 points), which replaced community organisation Guide Dogs (28.7 points) in second place.
YouGov CharityIndex measures the public’s perception of charities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on a daily basis across a range of measures. The charity rankings were compiled using the Donor Consideration score - a daily measure of which charities the nation would likely donate to tomorrow.
The rest of the overall ranking was consistent with last year’s, with all charities and NGOs other than Beyond Blue Ltd experiencing improvements in scores. Humanitarian aid and mental health groups The Salvation Army (26.4 points), Beyond Blue Ltd (25.3 points), Australian Red Cross (25.3 points), and Lifeline Australia (24.7 points) ranked fourth to seventh.
In eighth and ninth place were children’s charities Ronald McDonald House Charities (24.5 points) and Make-A-Wish Australia (22.5 points), which support children who are seriously ill and create life-changing wishes for those who are critically ill respectively. The National Breast Cancer Foundation rounded off the top ten most-considered charities with a Consideration score of 22.1 points.
Alongside the overall ranking, YouGov also released the top ten charities that achieved the biggest increase in Consideration score over the past year. This was topped by Starlight Children’s Foundation, which – although missed out on the overall ranking – had an improved score of +2.0 points. Australian Red Cross followed closely behind (+2.0 points).
The Leukaemia Foundation of Australia (+1.5 points) and Ronald McDonald House Charities (+1.5 points) were third and fourth most improved, followed next by the World Wide Fund for Nature (+1.4 points) and Lifeline Australia (+1.4 points).
Make-a-Wish Australia and breast cancer support and education charity McGrath Foundation were seventh and eighth most-improved, with a positive change of 1.3 points in the Consideration score.
Children’s cancer support group Camp Quality was next most improved (+1.2 points), while the Fred Hollows Foundation – an international development organisation working towards eliminating avoidable blindness and improving Indigenous Australian health – completed the Improvers’ rankings (+1.0 points).
